We were finally set up with internet yesterday and since we've had so many people request a blog (with pictures!) we decided to try it out. I (Laura) am writing today, but Russ promised me he would also do his share. We'll see...
We are on our third week here in Grand Rapids. Many of you already know about our escapades on our journey to Michigan. My choice would not have been to stay overnight the first night with two pets, or have to load and unload our trailer what felt like 50x, or have to rent another trailer, or have the hot humid weather with no AC when we did arrive, or have our sewer back up and have the city come out and dig up our line and in the process cut down two nice trees. However, through these circumstances we were able to meet and interact with several people: potty-mouthed policeman, tow truck driver (2x), city crew (Joe, Jake, and Derrick--oh, yes, we are on a first name basis after they went to bat for us to get the city to pay for this project), and the plumber just to name a few. And of course we were able to see God working through all of it--how Russ "accidentally" called cousin Dave just before he was ready to rent a truck, and Dave was able to get a truck and drive it to Indiana (and all of our stuff fit!), or how the city of Grand Rapids ended up footing the bill for this break in the line even though it was on "our" side not the city's, and most of all how He is working in our own hearts through all of these experiences.
We visited several churches so far. We have been to the Free Reformed, the Heritage Reformed, Seventh Reformed, and a new United Reformed church plant. I think we might try one more--the Reformed Presbyterian and then make our decision on what will be our new church home. Stay posted...
Additional thoughts by Russ ... I better add something now and try and clear my name and avoid further accusations (see above). Classes have started at the seminary and I think it will be a good semester. The one class that is causing the most stress is currently Hebrew. There is absolutely no connection to English so it really is like learning a language like a child would have to do early in their life (only without the power and malleability of a child's mind). Hopefully after a foundation is established and more rules are learned it will be a little better (The only problem is that my Hebrew professor said that the most important word in learning Hebrew is "usually" - that is not extremely comforting for someone looking for some solid direction).
The home is getting a little closer to being organized. There are still quite a few unfinished projects, but many rooms are box free and in working order. We will not talk about the work that needs to be done outside; that will have to wait until next spring/summer.
